Schiaparelli opened the Spring Summer 2024 season’s haute couture collections in Paris with an extraterrestrial bang.
The brand’s designer, Daniel Roseberry, treated the audience to a show inspired by the scientific studies of Giovanni Schiaparelli, uncle of Elsa Schiaparelli, founder of the fashion house. Giovanni, in 1877 as director of the Brera Observatory in Milan, discovered a series of canals that mark the surface of Mars.
“Giovanni Schiaparelli also coined the term ‘Martian’ and inadvertently started our modern fascination with creatures from another planet, which continues to this day, thanks to his discoveries,” the creative director told The Hollywood Reporter behind the scenes.

In addition to fashion, Giovanni’s niece was notoriously involved in stargazing and astrology, an occupation that included the whole family. Roseberry therefore took inspiration from this ancestral tradition and created “Schiaparalien,” a collection inspired by the inhabitants of Mars.
Garments and accessories paraded down the runway, such as a dress adorned with microchips, paying homage to the original codes devised by the founder of the historic maison, similar to keyholes with locks and the fascinating interest in human anatomy.
“Art and nature teach us that things and ideas that seem diametrically opposed to each other can also combine to create surprising delusions. Objects composed of familiar parts — the scientist and fashion designer, the uncle and niece — when combined, create something surprising and new. The results are figures and profiles at once familiar and unfamiliar, partly human, partly something else. So, totally ‘Schiaparelli,'” replied a satisfied Roseberry at the end of the fashion show.
Applauding the extraterrestrial creations were Euphoria lead Zendaya (sporting a new, very straight hairstyle with short bangs and a spectacular all-black outfit) and co-star Hunter Schafer (wearing a black gown with a floral-motif statement necklace in gold).
But the biggest star statement at the show was the ultra-voluminous white overcoat composed of real rose petals worn by Jennifer Lopez, who paired the look with black leggings and surrealist sunglasses. The coat, according to the brand, was “made of 7,000 real rose petals kept fresh and alive by sugar water, also known as hummingbird nectar.”
